General Music

The primary goal of the General Music program is to instill a life long appreciation and love of music. We start with the belief that all children are born with an intrinsic musicality and it is our job to nurture and develop this musicality in every child.

The Elmsford Elementary music program is holistic in nature and strives to produce young musicians who are creative and innovative. The program is also experiential and we believe that children learn by doing. The students in our program sing, dance and play pitched and non-pitched instruments. The musical teachings are developmental from kindergarten to the sixth grade. Students are exposed to and experience all types of music from many different genres and cultures. When they leave us at the end of sixth grade it is our hope that music will continue to be a large part of their artistic life.

Chorus

As an extracurricular enrichment activity, many elementary students enjoy the process of making music with friends and performing in an ensemble. Chorus is a great opportunity for these students to develop self-confidence and form friendships while learning new musical works and sharpening their music skills.

4th, 5th and 6th grade students are eligible for the Grady Chorus. Rehearsals are held two days a week in the morning before school. Students arrive at 7:20 am and remain with Chorus until the start of the school day. Past performances throughout the year have included District concerts, the Elmsford Tree Lighting Ceremony, Grady Living Wax Museum and the 6th Grade Graduation, among others.

Leading up to the chorus opportunity, students in 2nd and 3rd grades have choral experiences woven into the curriculum during general music classes. The opportunity to perform within the school day at Grady is offered during the regular school year.
